Wait till spring to make introductions easier and further egg production with spring and summer daylight.
-
All birds should be in egg production or starting to lay soon.

Even with plenty of light, some breeds take longer to mature and come into lay (production) then others. While some of our past White Leghorns started laying by 18 weeks of age (4 1/2 months). Most common backyard favorites take a little longer to mature; Barred Rocks, Buff Orpingtons and Speckled Sussexes tend to start closer to 6 months with most colored egg layers starting a few weeks afterwards. Large bodied birds such as Brahmas and English Orpingtons require greater time and often focus on building their frame before they start laying.
Most chickens lay best with 14 to 16 hours of light. Over winter with less sunlight, supplemental light is needed for best egg production.

HAVEN Hen's Policies
Cancelation Policies.
We are happy to work with you if you change your mind on what birds you are interested in.
Pre Order Down payments are nonrefundable unless we are unable to fulfill your order. These deposits of $10 to $18 per bird are used for program expenses.
One may choose to substitute or switch out an available bird for another during in person official Hen Sales, with any differences in cost due upon pickup. We are happy to work with you if you change your mind on what birds you are interested in.
Birds purchased in full will be refunded to their down payment value *minus a 4% processing fee that we cover with the initial purchase of the birds, should an order elected to be canceled by the customer.
In mixed set orders where some birds are purchased in full and others have a deposit placed upon them. Birds purchased in full will be refunded to their down payment value, minus a 4% processing fee that we cover with the initial purchase of the birds online.
If one is not available during our Hen Sales and has not reached out to us prior regarding alternative dates, the deposit would be retained by HAVEN for program expenses after three days. We will contact you either through email or text (in the manner given) beforehand.
If your schedule shifts or you are unable to pick up birds purchased in advance and are still interested in our started pullets, please reach out to us in advance. The initial payment can be applied to any remaining birds at one's discretion. Please note that availability may change.
Rooster Policies.
Most hatcheries offer a guarantee of 90 percent on their sexing or the potential for 1 rooster in every set of 10. We fully stand by our birds and will offer a full refund of the rooster(s) or a replacement hen of the same price tier on any roosters we have missed with proof of purchase within 30 days.
We do not offer sex guarantees on birds which have been purchased under 2 months of age. Straight run percentages may vary but are typically 50 percent males and 50 percent females though this may be skewed in small orders.
No roosters have been reported for the 2025 and 2024 season. One mis-sexed rooster was reported in 2023 who gallantly defended his hens from a fox.
By attending one voluntarily assumes the risks related and releases HAVEN and participating parties from liability.
